Eurydice

June 1 & 2, 2024 | The Greenspace at The Congregation

Sarah Ruhl’s Eurydice (2024) takes the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice and shifts the focus to the ill-fated heroine’s perspective. Following her untimely death on her wedding day, Eurydice finds herself in the underworld; there, she happens upon her Father and a chorus of characters as she tries to remember her past and her love before embarking on the journey that has kept her story echoing through centuries.

The production is a continuation of Keller’s artistic research toward pedagogy for dance performers expanding skill sets into the theatrical acting space. In collaboration with Maddy Petz’s movement style, an outdoor setting, and entirely reclaimed materials, this production of Eurydice hopes to find a playspace of whimsey, vulnerability, and an explosion of emotion for both the performers and the audience.

Under his direction, Kevin seeks to expand the skillset and vocabulary of the dancers and actors he collaborates with. Kevin has been seen onstage at Detroit Rep, the Jewish Ensemble Theatre, The Ringwald, and Riverbank Theatre. Past writing credits include Something Gay: A Brief Hookup which was a finalist and staged for the 2020 Louise Heck-Rabi playwriting festival and Front of House which was commissioned by Wayne State University in 2021. Kevin also developed a new adaptation of Frank Wedekind’s Spring’s Awakening which was performed in 2019 with his Wayfaring Theatre Company concept, as well as writing and consulting on Taylor Craft’s the semi-truck that blocks my view is still beautiful. kevin-t-keller.com

A Note from the Director

The first time I read this play, fully (sorry to every professor who assigned and I skimmed it), was on the train to brooklyn after seeing Hadestown on Broadway. Something about that show left me needing more, and maybe something different. Sarah Ruhl’s play was exactly what I needed, it was so full of whimsy, poeticism, and the perfect sense of humor to make my brain spark. Something in me knew this would be the work I needed to tackle and that seed hasn’t left my brain since.

Just before this, I had finished directing my first play, an edited version of Frank Wedekind’s Spring Awakening, the show that made me fall in love and made me want to pursue a career in theatre in the first place. I somehow convinced a group of friends to perform it outside with me as a send off to my time at Wayne State. Having spent as much time as possible hanging in the dance department at school, a good chunk of the people who I could convince to work for free were dancers and so I cast them.

Hannah, Amanda, Maddy, and Eric. They are the root of what I’m working towards now. They went into an acting process with complete trust, and took the risk as an artist. The time we spent together opened up my eyes to the worlds you can create when dancers begin to speak

This play is so special, the world it builds has allowed us to play, to experiment, to long, to love, to throw ourselves at the wall. All of my favorite things, and I’m so excited to get to share it with you.
